Ifakara

Ifakara town is located in the Kilombaro River valley (Morogoro Region) in south-central Tanzania with 290,424 inhabitants (2022 census). The town is surrounded by rain forests, wetlands, and vast savannah lands and can be reached by train (Tanzania-Zambia Railway “TAZARA”) or by road.

A majority of residents are subsistence farmers cultivating rice, maize, or cassava for food and trade. Fishing is also a very important activity due to the presence of the Kilombero and Lumemo rivers, permanent throughout the year. People live in mud or concrete houses with grass or tin roofing.

In Ifakara, there are major institutions of the Tanzanian Health sector: Ifakara Health Institute, St Francis Referral Hospital, Tanzanian Centre for International Health, and The Good Samaritan Cancer Hospital.
